Back on US Soil

It is of course, amusing that the WORST hostel I have yet, is in the States. I once stayed a night in a hotel in Virginia Beach that brought my bad hotel experiences to a whole new level, but this tops it. It is the dirtiest place I've been in, and there are only 8, yes 8, women in the same room with one tiny bathroom - toilet and shower in the same tiny room. There is also a kitchen - IN THE SAME ROOM. We have one women that the other girls tell me has supposedly been living in the hostel for a few months - and not to be alarmed when I wake up at 4 am and see her sitting in her underwear on the floor listening to music. This is completely normal. A second girl that most have concluded is a prostitute - I came to the same conclusion this afternoon when I came back and she lectured me on how I have to be quite because she only sleeps during the day. A third women, about 50 and very prim and proper that looked utterly horrified when she checked into our room this morning...oops, that travel agent is as good as fired. The 4 others and myself are relatively normal! I considered dropping my credit card and getting a swanky place - but this is what travel is all about, and I'm almost done. Anyway, outside of that, I'm having a fabulous time. I spent the day at the beach (the hostel is across the street, plus one) and this evening, after sunset, I watched the Grinch that Stole Christmas and White Christmas on a big screen on Waikiki Beach with an Aussie Girl (from the room) and a British guy, Jeff, that I happened to meet outside my hostel in Auckland. He had the same flight on to Hawaii and the same hostel as well...small world. Anyway, it's not everyday that you sand beneath you, palm trees around and Christmas movies playing over the sound of crashing waves.
Anyway, a friend of mine that I traveled through Cambodia with has a few friends here in HI that he went to University with back in the day. He sent their bio's :) a fireman and a Pediatrician, and let them know I was coming. It seems they are up to show me around, and even took off of work tomorrow...SO we'll see what the day brings!
