Chrissy

I’ve been trying to tone up my belly and have found good exercises for my abs, but I haven’t found an exercise that really works my obliques. I’ve tried the classic bicycle crunch, but that never does a thing. Any suggestions on some really effective exercises for obliques?

bicycle crunches…..your abs/obliques have one purpose….. pull your chest towards your hips… Sure there are a million ab exercises but just work crunches and planks and bicycles…. The main reason people cant see definition in their abs is cause their body fat % is too high and they are covered by fat.

    Hi Chrissy,

Side crunches work both the external and internal obliques. Ideally you should be doing about 50 side crunches on each side of the body each day. Gradually work your way up to more, and don’t rush. You may feel uncomfortable when doing these because it requires a bit of balance, but when you get into the swing of it, you are going to love them.

Also you can try twist-crunches: You lay in the crunch position, but instead of coming straight up and down when doing the crunch, touch your left elbow to your right knee and then your right elbow to your left knee. Try doing about 50-100 of these each day.

Often you’ll find that your abs & obliques are a lot stronger and more defined than you realise, but you can’t always see the definition until you cut down your body-fat to a lower percentage – but I’m sure you’re probably aware of that.

    Hope this helps,
    Peter.
